1. Johannes1 Bohland was born circa 1675 in Germany.
Children of Johannes1 Bohland include:

Generation Two

2. Johannes2 Bohland Jr. (Johannes1) was born circa 1706 in Hessen-Kassel, Germany. He married Anna Elizabeth Naumann on 4 Oct 1736 in Hessen-Kassel, Germany. He died circa 1757 in Hessen-Kassel, Germany.
Most of the names and dates for this family are from Ernest Pope Boland at ancestry.com.
Anna Elizabeth Naumann was born circa 1713 in Hessen-Kassel, Germany. She died in 1759 in Germany.
Children of Johannes2 Bohland Jr. and Anna Elizabeth Naumann were as follows:

Generation Three

3. Johannes Heinrich3 Bohland (Johannes2, Johannes1) was born on 2 Jun 1755 in Haina, Hesse-Cassel, Germany. He married (Kanze?) Counts circa 1782 in (SC). He married Anna Catherine Feltman, daughter of George Feltman and Elizabeth (--?--), circa 1787 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. He died in 1832 in Chapin, Lexington County, SC. He was buried in 1832 in Boland Cemetery, Little Mountain, Newberry County, SC.
He was also known as John Boland. Came to America as Hessian soldier about 1776--German 1st Infantry. He deserted; and later served in SC militia in Revolutionary War.
Census: 1790 Newberry County, SC, page 77; 1800 Lexington District, SC, page 261; 1810 Lexington District, page 69; 1820 Lexington County, SC, page 50.
The "History of the John Boland Family", written by Rev. Lawson Pettus Boland, provides us with most of the information about his family and his descendants.
Birthdate and parent's names are from the research of Ernest Pope Boland.

(Kanze?) Counts was born circa 1752. She died circa Jun 1784 in SC. Her married name was Boland.
Children of Johannes Heinrich3 Bohland and (Kanze?) Counts were:
Anna Catherine Feltman was born circa 1763. She died circa 1815 in Lexington County, SC. Her married name was Boland. Anna's birthdate in the 1800 census is earlier than 1755. In the 1810 census it is earlier than 1765. From the birthdates of the children, it is not likely she was born earlier than 1760.
Children of Johannes Heinrich3 Bohland and Anna Catherine Feltman were as follows:

Generation Four

4. Abraham4 Boland (Johannes Heinrich3 Bohland, Johannes2, Johannes1) was born on 20 May 1784 in Little Mountain, Newberry County, SC. He married Eve Christine Sease, daughter of John Sease and Nancy Shirer, circa 1808 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. He died on 12 Jan 1837 in Little Mountain, Newberry County, SC, at age 52. He was buried in Boland Cemetery, Newberry County, SC.
Abraham is in these censuses: 1810 Lexington County, SC, page 67; 1820 Lexington County, SC, page 46; 1830 Lexington County, SC, page 350. In 1810 census he is "Abm. Bolin".

Eve Christine Sease was born on 13 Jul 1787 in SC. She died on 11 Nov 1851 in (Newberry County), SC, at age 64. She was buried in Boland Cemetery, Newberry County, SC. Census: 1840 Lexington County, SC, page 101; 1850 Lexington County, SC, page 377.
Children of Abraham4 Boland and Eve Christine Sease were as follows:
5. Barbara4 Boland (Johannes Heinrich3 Bohland, Johannes2, Johannes1) was born circa 1788 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. She married Jeremiah McCartha circa 1811 in Lexington County, SC. She died circa 1814 in SC. She was buried in Coogler Cemetery, Lexington County, SC.
Donald Whitaker has provided the information on this family.
Jeremiah McCartha was born circa 1785. He died in 1866 in Lexington County, SC. He was buried in Coogler Graveyard, Lexington County, SC. He also went by the name of Jesse.
Children of Barbara4 Boland and Jeremiah McCartha were:
6. John4 Boland Jr. (Johannes Heinrich3 Bohland, Johannes2, Johannes1) was born in 1791 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. He married Rachael Catherine (--?--) circa 1810 in Lexington County, SC. He died after 1872 in AL or GA.
John is in every census from 1810 to 1866. He lived in South Carolina, Georgia, and Alabama. He married Rachel Catherine and they had six boys and five girls. There may have been one or two more children born between 1810 and 1820.
Censuses: 1810 Lexington County, SC, page 67; 1820 Lexington County, SC, page 50; 1830 Gwinnett County, GA, page 310; 1840 Muscogee County, GA, page 300; 1850 Tallapoosa County, AL, township 18, page 66; 1855 Tallapoosa County, AL, page 59; 1860 Columbus, Muscogee County, GA, page 362; 1866 Tallapoosa County, AL, page 144.
In the 1810 census John Jr. is shown with his wife and no children. So they probably married in 1810.
The 1820 John Jr. and his wife had 3 children: two boys and one girl between 0-10 years old. I think the girl was born about 1812, Jesse about 1817, and James Andrew in 1820.
In 1830 John and his wife had 6 children: two boys 10-15 (possibly Jesse and James A.), one boy and one girl 5-10, and one boy and one girl 0-5.
In 1840 John and his wife had 8 children: one boy 20-30, one boy and one girl 15-20, one boy 10-15, one boy and two girls 5-10, and one boy 0-5 years old. All five boys are in different age brackets.
The 1850 Tallapoosa County, AL census, page 66 has this entry:
Boland, John 58 M SC Farmer;
Boland, Katharine 58 F SC;
Boland, Francis 20 M GA;
Boland, Margarett 17 F GA;
Boland, William 14 M GA.
In the 1855 census for John Boland, there is one male over 21, one under 21 (maybe William), and one female over 21.
In 1860 there are
Boland, John 67;
Boland, Rachel C. 67; and
Adams, Margaret 28. Also Margaret's two children are listed.
In 1866 for John Boland, there is one male over 20, and one female over 20.
The index for 1850 lists him as "John Roland", but when you look at the actual record it says "Boland". A "B" and and "R" can look similar. The census taker separated a capital "B" from the rest of the name - as in "Benjamin". The capital "R" was connected to the next letters - as in "Rebecca". In the case of this census entry, the capital letter is separated from the other letters. After closer study, you can see the differences in the "B" and the "R". The census taker wrote a "B" for Boland.
John moved to Gwinnett County, Georgia in 1827. He moved to Muscogee County, GA in 1837. He moved to Alabama in 1850. He patented 80 acres of land on 1 May 1850 in Tallapoosa County, AL about ten miles north of Tallassee (in present-day Elmore County)--E1/2 NE Sec 33, Township 19 N, Range 21 E. He moved back to Muscogee County, GA before 1860. It appears he moved back to Tallapoosa County, AL between 1860 and 1866, since he appears in the 1866 Alabama census. He moved back to Georgia before his death in 1872. I don't know why he moved back and forth so often. The distance between his property in Tallapoosa County, AL and Columbus, GA is about 65 miles, so it was not a long distance to travel.
John Jr. died in 1855, according to Lawson P. Boland in "History of the John Boland Family", page 74. But it is now believed that he lived until after 1872. This is what Ernest P. Boland wrote to me on 29 Mar 2000: "John Boland was born ca. 1793 and he was believed to be still living in 1872, because E. Hugh Boland of Dallas, Texas has in his possession a letter written from Columbus, Ga. by his great grandmother Mary A. Cole, the wife of Jesse Boland, who was the son of John Boland Jr. This letter was written to her son John Milton Boland who had moved to Bell County, Texas. She made reference to someone he felt may have been John Boland, Jr. He would have been 78 years old at that time."
In the 1860 census John and Rachael C. were born in 1792/1793. In the 1850 census John and Katharine were born in 1791/1792. John Jr. was born about 1791, as listed in the "History of the John Boland Family". So all of the birth dates are essentially the same.
How is Katharine in the 1850 census the same as Rachel C. in the 1860 census? The census taker in 1850 could easily have put a K or a C, being pronounced the same, for Catharine. One of their sons is Francis, and his nickname could be Frank. Margaret is 17 in the 1850 census; she is 28 in the 1860 census. Margaret is important because she is in both censuses, so she helps tie both censuses together. William was born in 1835/1836. Catharine didn't have any children after William who lived to adulthood since they are not listed in the 1850 census.

Rachael Catherine (--?--) was born in 1792 in SC. She died after 1868 in AL or GA. She was also known as Katharine. She is listed with John Jr. in the 1810 census as 16 - 26; in 1820 as 26 - 45; in 1830 as 30 - 40; in 1840 as 40 - 50 years old. She is listed as Katharin in the 1850 census as 58 years old. The census taker could easily have spelled Catharine's name with a "K". In 1860 she is listed as Rachael C., 67 years old. So we have "Rachael Catharine Boland".
Children of John4 Boland Jr. and Rachael Catherine (--?--) were as follows:
7. David4 Boland (Johannes Heinrich3 Bohland, Johannes2, Johannes1) was born on 1 May 1797 in Lexington County, SC. He married Mary Cedelle Jones circa 1823 in Lexington County, SC. He died in 1860 in Bremond, Robertson County, TX.
David moved to Gwinnett County, Georgia in 1827. He moved to Muscogee County, GA in 1837. He moved to Robertson County, Texas about 1852.
Census: 1830 Gwinnett County, GA, page 337; 1840 Muscogee County, GA, page 300; 1850 Muscogee County, GA, page 410; 1860 Robertson County, TX, page 190. In 1850 David's children are Sarah E. 16, Jeremiah M. 14, Josiah A. 11, Martha J. 9, and Nancy Ann 5 years old.

Mary Cedelle Jones was born in 1805 in Orange County, NC. She died circa 1890 in (Robertson County), TX.
Children of David4 Boland and Mary Cedelle Jones were as follows:
8. Henry4 Boland (Johannes Heinrich3 Bohland, Johannes2, Johannes1) was born in 1799 in Lexington County, SC. He married Rebecca George circa 1826 in Lexington County, SC. He married Mary A. E. Huff circa 1832 in Lexington County, SC. He died on 17 Sep 1866 in Lexington, Lexington County, SC.
Census: 1820 Lexington County, SC, page 44; 1830 Lexington County, SC, page 348; 1840 Newberry County, SC, page 220; 1850 Newberry County, SC, page 267; 1860 Lexington County, SC, page 386. In the 1850 census Henry is 51 years old. In 1860 he is 60 years old. So he was born about 1799-1800.
In 1830 Henry has one boy 0-5 years old. In 1840 he had one boy 0-5, two girls 0-5, and two girls 5-10 years old. In the 1850 census the children listed for Henry are Mary A. 17, Elizabeth 12, Martha 10, Susanna 8, and Louisa 7 years old.

Rebecca George was born circa 1803. Marriage information with two children are from Ernest P. Boland.
Children of Henry4 Boland and Rebecca George were as follows:
Mary A. E. Huff was born in 1811 in SC. She died on 16 Feb 1859 in Lexington or Newberry County, SC. She is listed as Mary A. in the 1860 census.
Children of Henry4 Boland and Mary A. E. Huff were as follows:
9. Jacob4 Boland (Johannes Heinrich3 Bohland, Johannes2, Johannes1) was born circa 1803 in Lexington County, SC. He married Mary Esther Tinsley circa 1826 in Lexington or Newberry County, SC. He died on 13 May 1874 in Columbus, Muscogee County, GA. He was buried in Linwood Cemetery, Columbus, Muscogee County, GA.
Census: 1830 Newberry County, SC, page 141. In 1830 he was 20-30 years old and had one girl 5-10 and one boy 0-5 years old. May have moved from SC to Bibb County, GA; then to Muscogee County, GA in 1860. Some of the names and dates came from Ernest Boland, who received them from various sources.
Mary Esther Tinsley was born circa 1806. She died circa 1860 in Fairfield County, SC.
Children of Jacob4 Boland and Mary Esther Tinsley were as follows:

Generation Five

10. Frederick5 Boland (Abraham4, Johannes Heinrich3 Bohland, Johannes2, Johannes1) was born on 29 Mar 1811 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. He married Anna Dorithy Bickley, daughter of Thomas Uriah Bickley and Catherine Caughman, circa 1830 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. He died circa 1866 in Calhoun County, MS. He was buried in MS.
Fred is in these censuses: 1840 Lexington County, SC, page 80; 1850 Lexington County, SC, page 376; and 1860 Calhoun County, MS, page 583. In 1840 Fred is 20-30. In 1850 he is 36. In 1860 he is 49. Many references to his birthdate point to 1811. The "History of the John Boland Family", page 9, says it was the early part of 1811. All of the children of Abraham and Eve are at least 24 months apart. From William (1809) to Joseph (1811) is 26 months. From Joseph (1811) to John Adam (1813) is 24 months. Since his brother Joseph was born on 29 March 1811, wouldn't that make Fred and Joseph twins?
We find the parents of Fred Boland in the "History of the John Boland Family" on page 8. It discusses the family of Abraham and Eve C. Boland. It says "Of this union there were born nine sons and one daughter: William, Fred, John Adam, Levi, Catherine (Katie), Mark, Joseph, Walter, Middleton, and Ozro."
In the "History of the John Boland Family" on page 24, we find this phrase: "Kelly Boland, a great grandson of Fred Boland". Two connecting links are necessary to make a complete chain of generations. In the book those two links are not listed in one place. So we must rely on statements on page 9 and page 24. There is not a direct connection shown in the census record, so we must rely on the 1850 and the 1900 U.S. censuses.
The "History of the John Boland Family", page 9, states that "Uncle Fred and Aunt Dollie became the parents of nine children, five sons and four daughters: Uriah, Wesley, Sarah Ann, Louise, William, Jim, Catherine, George, and Henrietta." In the 1850 census for Lexington County, SC, page 376, Frederick Boland is shown with eight of his children, five boys and three girls. The fourth girl Henrietta was yet to be born; she is listed in the 1860 census. The family is listed this way: The entries are all Boland, and all born in SC: Frederick 36, Anna P. 42, Joseph W. 19, Sarah L. 16, Uriah A. 14, Louisa T. 12, William G. 11, Christina C. 7, James C. 5, and George T. 2. Compare the five boys in the book and in the census. Uriah = Uriah A., William = William G., Jim = James C., George = George T. That leaves only one other son. Wesley = Joseph W. Wesley in the book = Joseph W. in the census. Thus we have "Joseph Wesley Boland", the oldest son of Frederick. One of these five boys is the grandfather of Kelly Boland.
In the 1900 census we find that William C. is the father of Kelley S. Boland. So Kelley's father is William C. His grandfather is either Uriah A., William G., James C., George T., or Joseph Wesley.
Let's look at the seven grandsons of Fred. (1) Uriah married, but had no children, page 9. (2) William's sons were William Bradford and Edward, page 10. (3) Jim never married, so he didn't have any sons, page 11. (4) George's sons were James W., Jacob, John B., and Fred, page 11. (5) Wesley's son was Billy Capers, page 9. So Fred had a total of seven grandsons. Does any of them match Kelley's father, who was William C., aka as William Capers (Capus), or Billy? There is a William Bradford and a Billy Capers. The middle initial of "C" is the deciding factor. It is Billy Capers. So Billy Capers is William Capers, who is Kelley's father; and Joseph Wesley Boland is his grandfather.
Now we have connected four generations of Bolands. Fred Boland; Joseph Wesley, his son; William Capers (Capus), his grandson, and finally Kelley S. Boland, his great grandson.

Anna Dorithy Bickley was born in 1808 in SC. She died after 1880 in MS. She was buried in MS. She also went by the name of Dollie. Census: 1840 Lexington County, SC, page 80; 1850 Lexington County, SC, page 376 - Anna P.; 1860 Calhoun County, MS, page 583 - Dority;1870 Calhoun County, MS, page 426 - Ann as head of house, and 3 children; 1880 Calhoun County, MS, ED 13, sheet 11 - Anna D. as head of house, 3 children and 1 great granddaughter Nettie, age 5. I think her name should be written "Anna Dorothy".
Children of Frederick5 Boland and Anna Dorithy Bickley were as follows:
11. Joseph5 Boland (Abraham4, Johannes Heinrich3 Bohland, Johannes2, Johannes1) was born on 29 Mar 1811 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. He married Magdelene Frick, daughter of Thomas Frick III and Elizabeth Counts, circa 1831 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. He married Harriet Elizabeth Shealy, daughter of Adam Shealy and Anna Nancy Corley, circa 1850 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. He died on 27 Oct 1897 in Newberry County, SC, at age 86.
Census: 1840 Lexington County, SC, page 222; 1850 Newberry County, SC, page 229; 1860 Newberry County, SC, page 213; 1870 Newberry County, SC, page 705; 1880 Newberry County, SC, ED 117, sheet 16. The "History of the John Boland Family", page 15, has his birthdate as 1821. But the censuses show his birth date to be about 1811. In 1840 he is 20-30 years old. In 1850 he is 40. In 1860 he is 49. In 1870 he is 56. In 1880 he is 69. Also, the firstborn of his second marriage was born in 1837, according to the 1850 census. He had four children by the first marriage. That would make his first marriage about 1831. Joseph was 20 years old at that time, not 10. So the birthdate of 1811 must be the right date. Since Frederick was born in early 1811, and Joseph was born in Mar 1811, that would mean that Joseph and Frederick are twins.
Magdelene Frick was born on 20 Feb 1812. She died on 7 Feb 1849 at age 36.
Children of Joseph5 Boland and Magdelene Frick were as follows:
Harriet Elizabeth Shealy was born on 5 Dec 1823 in SC. She died on 3 Jul 1882 in (Newberry County), SC, at age 58.

Generation Six

38. Joseph Wesley6 Boland (Frederick5, Abraham4, Johannes Heinrich3 Bohland, Johannes2, Johannes1) was born in 1831 in Newberry or Lexington County, SC. He married ? Denley circa 1854 in MS. He died on 2 Apr 1863 in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, TN. He was buried circa 4 Apr 1863 in The Confederate Cemetery, Chattanooga, Hamilton County, TN.
Joseph W. is in the 1850 Lexington County, SC census, page 376, as the son of Frederick Boland. I have not found Joseph W., or Wesley, in the 1860 census.
The fourth girl Henrietta was yet to be born. Thus we have "Joseph Wesley Boland", the oldest son of Frederick and Anna Boland.
The book on page 9, says "Wesley married a Miss Denley. They were the parents of three children: Billy Capers, Georgia Ann, and Maggie. Wesley went off to fight in the Confederate Army, and was never heard from again."
Joseph Wesley served the Confederacy, in the 29th Mississippi Infantry, Company F, under Colonel Edward C. Walthall. He enlisted on 3 Apr 1862 at Grenada (about 25 miles west of Big Creek); it was in Yalabosha or Grenada County, Mississippi. He is listed in "Roster of Confederate Soldiers" as "J.W. Boland, 29th Infantry, Company F of Mississippi". He probably fought in the Battle of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. About March 1863 he became sick, taken to Ferard Hospital in Chattanooga, TN. He died in the hospital of pneumonia on 2 April 1863. He was buried in Chattanooga, TN. His name is J.W. Boland in his enlistment. The name on his gravestone is J.W. Bowland. There are many names misspelled in The Confederate Cemetery.
Joseph Wesley's only son was Billy Capers. For a discussion of Billy Capers, see the notes for William Capers (Capus) Boland.
